With the advent of social media, the world is becoming smaller and relationships are being taken into the virtual world. Smart phones, tablets and PC’s are making it easier to communicate with someone on the remotest corner of the world. However, with everything being done so quickly and available in the palm of one’s hand, it has made people much more restless, edgy and prone to short tempers. A lot of the people lose sight of what is truly important in the world and turn their focus to materialistic wealth to keep themselves happy in the present.

People are more fickle with relationships, ignore their loved ones, immerse themselves in work and prefer to spend their weekends hung over or drenched in alcohol. With traditional values of family, loyalty and humility are soon becoming a thing of the past, the miasma of negativity and hate has made most forget about their bountiful blessings and the things they get to experience and enjoy which most people don’t have the opportunity for. In order to lead a contented and happy life, you should learn to take in your surroundings and learn to be grateful for what you have.

Be grateful about the positive things in your life :

Most people lose sight of all the good things and supportive people in their life if they find themselves in a bad situation. They begin to over think and imagine all the worst possible outcomes that can come out of the situation instead of trying to find a way to positively deal with it. Most negative thoughts and situations are comparatively small when compared to all the good things that a person has faced and encountered in their life. Even a small random act of kindness from a complete stranger or a smile can help lift someone’s spirits. Not everyone has the luxury of having three meals a day, a roof over their shoulder and clean clothes to wear every day. Understanding that one is abundantly blessed can go a long way in learning how to grateful.

Find the positive in any negative situation :

A lot of people succumb to negative situations without trying to put up a fight. Failure to repay a loan can have severe repercussions. Losing a valuable item can be quite heartbreaking if one has emotional attachments to the object. The loss of a near and dear one can throw someone’s life into turmoil. Everyone has to face some form of disappointment in their lives. No one has a picture perfect life as posted on their social media. One small step to counter this without letting it devour your thoughts is by finding that small ray of positive light in any negative situation. Failure to repay a loan might make a person extra careful with making their payments on time and losing a valuable item would make someone be heedful of keeping their things safe. And trying to move on from a death can be painful but it shows us that time is fleeting and the person must have lived a happy life. One way to keep in touch with all the things you are grateful for is to write down your thoughts and positive list on a small journal. A lot of people depend on someone else for their happiness or sorrow. Most of the world’s population has no proper food, clothing or shelter or if they do have the basic necessities, they do not have good health to enjoy those luxuries. By getting better involved with an organization, not only do you begin to appreciate whatever you have, it also makes it worthwhile to work for a cause and to lift someone’s spirit. And a good deed always gets rewarded whether one expects it or not.

Stop complaining, gossiping or criticizing someone :

With so many people trying to put each other time, a small word of comfort, hug or a praise can do wonders to boost self confidence or make someone happy. So instead of gossiping about someone or providing negative criticism about their work, try to find the good in them and their deed and let them know about it. It clears the air and leaves two people happy in the end instead of one. It is always a joy to see someone’s happy and hopeful expression because of you.

It would be ideal if you could create a special little place where meditation can naturally unfold. Even better, you can create an altar or a shrine that you can face during meditation. 3. Eyes ( Half-Open or Closed)

While most people associate the meditation practice with keeping the eyes closed ( as in Vipassana meditation) and mentally drawing the eyes toward the third eye, the choice of keeping your eyes half open or closed while meditating is entirely yours, as there no right or wrong way in terms of what to do with the eyes ( in fact this varies among different meditation methods and even teachers). Overall, you should advisedly experiment with both half-open and closed eyes methods and see what works for you. 4. Focus

Meditation is a proven wake-up call that fine-tunes your body, mind and spirit to realize the true essence of life. In ordinary life, focus equates to concentration where we use our mind as a focused beam of light to achieve our mundane goals. In meditation on the other hand, focus has different connotations and using our tortured, disorganized minds immersed in turmoil is not helpful. 5. Breathing

Paying close attention to your natural breathing is an important part of learning how to meditate. The abdomen expands and relaxes as you inhale and contracts as you exhale. Observe your breathing, but refrain from regulating it because it’s paramount to come natural. As your focus strengthens, your breathing starts to slow down and deepen, becoming quite subtle and increasingly finer. You will effortlessly begin to relax once residual tension has faded away and will experience a state of well-being, tranquility and peacefulness. You should devote at least a couple of minutes per day to this breathing relaxation practice.

6. Counting your breaths

In case you are having trouble relaxing so that calm can ensue, you may try the ancient meditation practice of mentally counting your breaths – “one” as you breathe in, “two” as you breathe out, “three” as you breathe in again and “four” as you breathe out; then go back to “one”. Whenever your thoughts tend to wander, breath counting can help you settle and clear your mind. Returning to “one” allows you to anchor yourself in the present moment and focus your awareness on your breathing.

7. Thoughts

Meditation takes place in the absence of thoughts; when you notice thoughts hovering over your mind, you should gently let them disappear on their own by staying focused on your breath. Trying to forcefully stop thoughts will only make you feel more unsettled and anxious. The mind that doesn’t dwell on anything is known in the Buddhist tradition as the “original nature” or “true mind”. One way to let thoughts go naturally is to imagine they are unwelcome visitors that you politely ask to leave. At no time should anything feel uncomfortable or forced; instead, it should all happen free of any concern or worry on your part.

8. Silence

Do not force yourself to sit for longer periods as you learn how to meditate if you experience any discomfort or restlessness after some time. You can gradually increase the duration of your meditation to 20-25 minutes, which allows you to stabilize your mind without causing a lot of stress on your physical body, and in time, to even an hour or more per day. The most important thing is to do what feels right and especially comfortable for you.

11. Delight

Equally important is to take great delight in practicing meditation because enjoyment holds a powerful significance over the outcome of your entire efforts. In keeping with the Kalama Sutra, do not do something because you have been told to do so, but instead find out what works for you. Don’t put pressure onto yourself – just be kind to yourself and let meditation unfold naturally, as it should. A simple act of caring creates an endless ripple. This is the message of this inspiring story. It’s a commercial for Care & Share, a charity. In the video, a grandmother and her grandchildren are at the super market pushing a cart through the aisles. The grandmother reaches up and puts a discount food item that appears to be grain or flour and puts it into the cart.

Meanwhile, the little girl is in the bakery section. She is looking at all the cakes in their little containers, all round and lit up in the display. A young gentleman reaches in and pulls out the cake for the little girl because she is not tall enough to reach it. She smiles and goes away to find her grandmother with the cake.

The little boy, little girl and grandmother go to the checkout line and the cashier is bagging up the food they have selected. There is a small plastic container on the belt. Inside it is an elegant small cake. The peach cake comes up on the scanner and costs quite a bit more than the other food. The cashier tells the grandmother the total of their bill. The grandmother checks the bills that she is holding. The little boy counts out change to pay for the groceries, hoping they will have enough to make it. He shakes his head at his grandmother to let her know that they will not be able to pay the full total of the bill.


The grandmother looks at the cashier lady. “I’m sorry,” she says apologetically, “Can I return the cake please?”

“Sure, yes,” the cashier says to her. The yellow cake is taken out of the plastic bag it has already been placed in. The little girl sees this and turns to her grandmother. “I want the cake, please, I won’t ask for anything else,” the girl says.

“Next time, please, when we can afford it,” the grandmother says to the girl.

“Last time you said that,” the girl says. She goes and takes both of the plastic bags full of discount groceries to carry home. The brother runs up to the girl and takes the bags from her to hold. He tells her that next time they will get her what she wants. “Let’s buy something else, okay?” He says to his sister.

The young man from the cake display is getting his groceries rung up behind them. He tells the cashier that he would like to buy the same cake that has been set aside. He catches up to the family and extends the cake, saying that it is for them.

The grandmother says she cannot accept it. The man says “Please.” She tells him that there isn’t any reason for him to buy the cake for them. But the man smiles and explains what happened many years ago when he was seven. A simple act of caring creates an endless ripple.

“Here, have the cake,” he told the boy. “Happy birthday.” The boy took the cake and the man ruffled the boy’s hair as he stood up. The man turned to walk away, and then he turned around in the doorway and looked at the boy. The boy looked at him gratefully. The man smiled and walked away. So you see, it is true. “I have never forgotten,” he says. The grandmother thanks him, and he thanks her back. She gets his number to compensate him for the cake. He asks the child if they will do the same thing for someone else in the future.

The kids come back and their grandfather is there in a wheelchair. They give it to him. He thanks them and smiles, and then confides in his wife that she should not have spent the money as they cannot afford it. She tells him that actually, a nice man paid for it. He gave her a note. It is the note that the man who bought him the cake gave him all those years ago.

The man opens it and it says, “A simple act of caring creates an endless ripple.” The older man smiles. The kids and his wife come in with the cake, which is lit up with candles.
